Correspondence, account books, and other papers of Samuel Cary, a Chelsea, Mass., native who made his fortune on a plantation in Grenada. Most of the correspondence concerns the trade with Great Britain in sugar, rum, and coffee. Cary corresponded with British businessmen Charles Spooner, Joseph Sill, and John Campbell. Other correspondents include William Thornton, David Barry, and Cary's sons Samuel and Lucius. The letters Cary wrote are contained in letterbooks. Other volumes include a tax account book for the residents of St. Christopher (St. Kitt's); a memo book containing advice for plantation owners, which includes tips on the treatment of slaves and the manufacture of sugar; Cary's orderly book as Captain of the First Company of the St. Andrews Regiment on Grenada (1778-79); and a letterbook of Boston lawyer Charles Paine. (Cont'd) Also, a log book (1819-21) kept by James Bromfield Forbes on the ship Levant on a voyage from Boston to the Columbia River, Hawaii, Canton, and back to Boston. An oversize case contains a plan of Mount Pleasant, Cary's Grenada estate, and account papers.

Samuel Cary, Jr., was born in 1742 in the Boston suburb of Chelsea. Following his graduation from Harvard, he moved to the West Indies where he managed plantations for various individuals before purchasing a Grenada sugar plantation.
